Dry scrubber removal of SOx emitted by a battery recycling plant

Defining the issue

Our customer is a Swedish lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb) recovery center which recycles used batteries using a smelting process. To meet new environmental standards, the customer was obliged to make a major investment for treating flue gas from their smelting furnace and from the different chimney hoods. The constraints were the following:

  • Removal of 80% of SO2 from the exhaust gases
  • Recyclable residue in the smelting furnace. The process they originally selected was a wet scrubber using caustic soda. Nevertheless, a dry scrubber would be far less costly and preferable from a practical point of view.
